Detoxing: What Is It And Why Do You Need It?

You have probably had periods in your life where you couldn’t find the will to do even the most basic of tasks. Perhaps you were feeling under the weather, both emotionally and physically, or perhaps you were going through a rough patch in your life. Unless there was a particular event that led to such feelings – say a depressive spell or an injury – you might have found yourself perplexed. The answer might actually be quite simple – your body was simply tired from working too hard.

Of course, this does not refer to exhausting yourself at work or school, but instead, it means that your body just could not keep up with all the impurities in the body. Fatigue, puffy eyes or eye bags, menstrual cramps, headaches, skin issues, etc. can sometimes find their root cause in an overworked body that cannot handle its metabolic functions. In such instances, it is your responsibility to help your body out – with a detoxification regime. You might have heard of coffee body scrubs that work to detoxify your skin, or detox water that cleanses your body from inside out. To put it simply, detoxification means exactly that – the removal of toxins.

The practice goes back to over a thousand year as an Ayurvedic ritual of the Indian subcontinent (and other Asian cultures as well); it involves getting rid of impurities in the blood through a healthy diet and other treatments, in addition to forms of meditation and yoga. Generally, most detox programs nowadays last a week, and they generally involve yoga programs coupled with liquid diets of fruits and vegetables.If it seems somewhat too extreme a regime for you, there are other options of course. For example, you can start off by cutting back on substances that detrimentally impact your body, such as cigarettes, excessive alcohol intake, drugs, etc. There are also varieties of delicious detox tea that can give you similar results (they generally follow a twenty-eight-day routine or longer, however). Keep in mind that at the heart of detoxing is keeping your mind and body healthy, so stressing yourself to follow a particular routine won’t exactly have the best of results!

If you are interested, it should be worthwhile to know that most experts on the topic suggest detoxing at least once per year. However, keep in mind that whilst healthy teenagers and adults can safely undergo detox programs, it is advised to get the recommendation of a medical practitioner if you suffer from a chronical illness (e.g. cancer, tuberculosis, etc.), are a pregnant woman or are yet a child.
